Salmo, is a small village nestled in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. Established in the late 19th century during the era of railway expansion, Salmo served as a vital hub along the historic route of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Named after the Salmo River that flows through the region.

Throughout the early 20th century, Salmo experienced periods of growth and prosperity, fueled in part by the logging and mining industries that thrived in the surrounding mountains. Sawmills and mines dotted the landscape, providing employment opportunities and shaping the town's economic landscape. However, like many communities in the region, Salmo faced challenges with the decline of traditional industries in the latter half of the century. Yet, it persevered, evolving into a vibrant community known for its strong sense of community spirit and resilience.

Today, Salmo retains much of its small-town charm while embracing the opportunities of the modern era. Its historic downtown core boasts a mix of well-preserved heritage buildings and contemporary amenities, including locally-owned shops, cafes, and galleries. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Salmo's proximity to pristine wilderness areas, offering a plethora of recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and skiing. With its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and tight-knit community, Salmo continues to thrive as a hidden gem in the heart of the Kootenays, welcoming visitors and residents alike to experience its unique blend of past and present.

Ymir, nestled in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, boasts a rich history intertwined with the region's mining heritage. Named after the Norse god of chaos and destruction, Ymir was established in the late 19th century during the heyday of the Kootenay mining boom. Gold, silver, and lead were abundant in the surrounding hills, attracting fortune seekers from all corners of the globe. The town flourished with the construction of mines, smelters, and infrastructure to support the growing population of miners and their families.

In its early years, Ymir was a bustling hub of activity, with saloons, hotels, and businesses lining its streets. However, as the mining industry waned in the mid-20th century, so too did the prosperity of Ymir. Many residents left in search of new opportunities, and the town's population dwindled. Yet, Ymir never lost its charm or sense of community. Today, it is a quaint and picturesque village, home to artists, outdoor enthusiasts, and those seeking a slower pace of life. The historic buildings still stand as a testament to Ymir's past, while the surrounding wilderness offers endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor adventures. With its rich history and stunning natural beauty, Ymir continues to attract visitors who are drawn to its unique blend of past and present.

HOUSING/REAL ESTATE

Housing options in Salmo range from single-family homes to townhouses, 55+ independent living, apartments, mobile home parks, and rural properties. The village offers a mix of older heritage homes with character features, as well as newer construction to meet the needs of residents. Due to its picturesque location and relatively affordable real estate prices compared to larger urban centers, Salmo attracts a mix of homeowners, retirees, young families, and individuals seeking a slower pace of life in a tranquil mountain setting.

In recent years, Salmo has experienced some growth in its real estate market, driven in part by its appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for a more affordable alternative to nearby cities like Nelson or Castlegar. However, the market remains relatively stable compared to larger urban centers, with a range of housing options available to suit different budgets and lifestyles.
